Taobao App in English: How to Switch It, and Where It Stops Working

By Marty Cipher · Community & Partnerships · Published

You can put the Taobao app in English, but only through a region setting, and only in the regions where Taobao has switched English on. The menu path is in Chinese, it has moved between app versions, and the switch translates the app's frame far better than it translates the listings. Below: the switch, what it changes, and the three places the app still stops an overseas buyer.

Quick answer Open the Taobao app, tap 我的淘宝 (My Taobao), then the gear icon for 设置 (Settings). Set your country or region to one where Taobao offers English, then choose English under 语言 (Language). The menus switch, but seller chat, text inside product photos and checkout rules still follow the region you picked.

Does the Taobao App Have an English Version?

Yes, in some regions. Taobao launched its first official English interface in Singapore and Malaysia in September 2024, with local currency prices and AI-translated product descriptions. In February 2025 it reached Hong Kong and Macao, and later guides report it in Australia and New Zealand too.

It is not a separate app. English is an option inside the regular Taobao app, and it only appears once your account's country or region is set to a place that supports it. Mainland China users did not get the option.

How to Change the Taobao App to English

These are the steps most 2025 walkthroughs describe, with the Chinese labels to look for. Taobao reshuffles its settings between app versions, so your screens may not match exactly.

  1. Open the app and tap 我的淘宝 (My Taobao), bottom right.
  2. Tap the gear icon, top right, to open 设置 (Settings).
  3. Tap 国家/地区 (Country/Region). Pick a region that supports English and tap 确认 (Confirm). Most guides use 中国香港 (Hong Kong).
  4. Go back into Settings. The same row now reads 国家/地区/语言/货币 (Country/Region/Language/Currency).
  5. Tap 语言 (Language), choose English, and confirm.

On some newer versions, Language sits under 通用 (General) in Settings instead. If you cannot find either route, the English option is usually not live for the region your account is set to.

What Changes in English, and What Stays in Chinese

The switch translates the frame: tabs, menus, settings, order status and category names. In the launch regions, titles and descriptions get machine translation too, which is readable but literal.

Three things stay Chinese, and for cosplay they are the ones that matter:

  • Text inside product photos. Sellers put variant names, what is included and measurement charts in images, and the app does not translate pixels. The camera mode of Google Translate or Google Lens covers this.
  • Seller chat. Questions about a variant or a made-to-order timeline still go to a Chinese-speaking seller.
  • Search depth. English keywords return thinner results than the Chinese terms sellers use. Searching by photo works better, and our image search guide shows how.

Where the Taobao App Stops Overseas Buyers

The language was never the real wall. These three are.

The phone code

Signing up means receiving an SMS verification code. Taobao accepts numbers from many countries, but the code does not always arrive on overseas carriers, and VoIP numbers are often refused.

Payment

Taobao checkout runs through Alipay. You can link an international card, but it does not work for every seller or every order, and payment options can change when you switch region. One Shanghai tech blog found Alipay gone and a card surcharge added once the app was in English.

Shipping to your country

Most sellers ship only within mainland China, and Taobao's own cross-border options cover a limited list of places that changes over time. The Hong Kong setting gets you English, but it also sets you up for Hong Kong prices and delivery. It will not put a US or UK address at checkout. We cover the US side in detail in our Taobao USA guide.

Use the App to Find It, Then Paste the Link Into Cosparty

Keep the app for what it is good at: scrolling, image search and saving listings. When you find the one, tap 分享 (Share) on the listing and copy the link. Taobao copies a short tb.cn link, often wrapped in a line of Chinese text.

Paste the whole thing into the Cosparty search. We accept item.taobao.com, detail.tmall.com and tb.cn share links, so you do not need a Taobao account, a Chinese phone number or Alipay. You see the full price before you pay:

  • the item price
  • shipping by parcel size
  • a 15% service fee charged on the item and shipping together
  • an optional quality check in China, $5 per item, on by default

You pay by card, and we handle the seller conversation in Chinese. Delivery typically takes 10-21 days, and up to 4 weeks for made-to-order pieces. For the no-account route step by step, see buying cosplay from Taobao without an account.

Taobao App in English: FAQ

Why can't I find the English option in the Taobao app?

The option only appears after your country or region is set to a place where Taobao offers English, and its menu location differs between app versions. Check both Country/Region and General in Settings.

Can I check out in English with a foreign card?

Sometimes. Alipay accepts linked international cards, but individual sellers and regions vary, and there may be an added fee. Through Cosparty you pay by card in one order, with no Alipay account.

Does switching to English let Taobao ship to me?

No. The language setting changes what you read, not where sellers ship. Most sellers only deliver inside mainland China.

Found It in the App? Get It Shipped

Put the Taobao app in English to browse, and copy the share link when you find the fit. Paste it into the Cosparty search to see the all-in price before you commit. Questions about a listing go to contact@cospartyco.com or our Discord, where real cosplayers answer.
