Comic Con Costumes on a Deadline: The Convention Cosplay Checklist

By Marty Cipher · Community & Partnerships · Published

Comic con costumes ordered from Taobao should be ordered at least 5 to 6 weeks before the convention. Typical delivery is 10 to 21 calendar days from order confirmation, made-to-order pieces usually run up to 4 weeks, and the last two weeks are for trying the costume on and fixing what needs fixing.

The badge was bought months ago. The hotel is booked. The costume is still a screenshot in your camera roll, and the con is the one date in all of this that won't move.

We are Cosparty, a sourcing concierge for Taobao cosplay: you search in English, we buy the listing you picked and ship it to your door. This is the convention cosplay checklist we'd hand a friend with a fixed date. Count back from your con, read off your own dates, and if you're already late, skip to the section on late orders. Every window on this page is an estimate, and nothing here promises an arrival date.

Quick answer Count back from the first day of your con. Order made-to-order or multi-piece costumes 6 weeks before, and a single ready-made piece 5 weeks before. Aim to have it in your hands 2 weeks before, finish alterations 1 week before, and pack 2 days before. Delivery windows are estimates, not guarantees.

Already have the listing or the screenshot? Search Taobao in English and see the full price before you commit to a date.

The Convention Cosplay Checklist: Count Back from Your Con Date

Start from the first day of your con and count back in weeks. Each row is the latest comfortable date for that step, and earlier is always fine. The calendar is the same whether you call them comic con costumes, comic con outfits or cosplay.

Where 5 to 6 weeks comes from: Three weeks is the top of the typical delivery estimate. Four weeks is the usual outer estimate for a made-to-order piece. Two more weeks cover the try-on, the alterations and a customs delay. That adds up to 5 weeks for a ready-made piece and 6 for anything sewn after you buy.

The date that is missing: There is no separate ship-by date in the table, on purpose. Our estimate runs from order confirmation to your door, and seller processing, the quality check if you kept it and international transit all sit inside it. The order date is the one you control, so it is the one this checklist is strict about.

Why the window is that long, and how it plays out by country, is covered in our Taobao cosplay shipping time guide. This page only does the calendar.

Two Worked Examples with Real 2027 Dates

Both conventions below have published their 2027 dates. Swap in your own con and the arithmetic is the same.

C2E2, Chicago: April 30 to May 2, 2027

C2E2 opens on Friday, April 30, 2027. Say Dani is bringing Kafka (Honkai: Star Rail), and the listing is made to order.

StepWeeks beforeDate
Plan and measure8March 5
Order by, made to order6March 19
Order by, ready-made5March 26
In hand by2April 16
Alterations done by1April 23
Pack2 daysApril 28

Dani uses the 6-week date and orders by March 19. If the order runs to the usual 4-week estimate, it lands around April 16. A ready-made piece ordered on March 26 would land between April 5 and April 16 on the typical 10 to 21 days.

Either way she has two weeks, on paper. If production or customs runs long, those two weeks are what absorbs it.

Emerald City Comic Con, Seattle: March 4 to 7, 2027

Emerald City Comic Con opens on Thursday, March 4, 2027. Six weeks back is January 21. That date has a problem: Chinese New Year falls on February 6 in 2027, right between the order and the con, and sellers slow down or pause around it.

When a Chinese holiday sits inside your window, work out two dates and take the earlier one:

  • 6 weeks before the con: January 21.
  • 3 weeks before the holiday: January 16. That is the holiday rule from our shipping time guide.

So Sam, taking Luffy (One Piece) to Seattle, orders by January 16 at the latest. Before he pays, he asks us whether that seller can finish before the shutdown. The rest of his calendar holds: in hand by February 18, alterations done by February 25, packed by March 2.

The other holiday to check is Golden Week in early October, which matters for cons from mid-October into November.

Have your order-by date? Paste the link or drop the screenshot into the search and read the full total first: the item, shipping, the service fee, and the quality check if you keep it.

Before You Order: Five Checks That Protect the Date

The order date only works if the order is right the first time. All sales are final once sourcing has begun, and a deadline leaves no room for a second attempt.

  • Made to order, or ready-made? Ask us in our Discord or at contact@cospartyco.com for the seller's own estimate on that listing before you commit to a deadline. Made to order is normal for cosplay. It's also the slower path.
  • A standard size, picked in centimeters: We don't source made-to-measure listings, so choose from the seller's chart. Chinese cosplay sizing runs about one to two sizes smaller than Western sizing. The Taobao cosplay sizing guide covers reading the chart.
  • The quality check stays on: It is optional, and you can switch it off before checkout. With it on, we check for the wrong item, the wrong color, visible damage and missing pieces while the parcel is still in China, where a problem can be sorted out with the seller. It can't check how the costume fits you. What it catches and misses is in our Taobao cosplay quality guide.
  • The prop passes your con's rules: Every convention writes its own. C2E2's cosplay and prop rules, for one, ban metal blades whether sharp or blunt. They also cap most weapon props at 150 cm, or 180 cm for a narrow staff or spear. Anything longer has to come apart without tools. Large props also ship in our Oversized tier, which starts at $50.
  • The whole bill is budgeted: Your total shows the item price, shipping by size, a 15% service fee on the item and shipping together, and the quality check if selected. Import duties, VAT and carrier fees are outside that total and charged to you directly when the parcel reaches your country. Pay them when the carrier asks, so the parcel keeps moving.

Late Already? What to Do at 4, 3 and 2 Weeks Out

Under 5 weeks, the question changes from when to order to whether to order. At 4 weeks, order ready-made pieces only. At 3 weeks, an order is a gamble that needs a backup next to it. At 2 weeks, don't order this con's costume from Taobao.

Time to the conWhere you standWhat we'd do
4 weeksA ready-made piece on the typical 10 to 21 days leaves one to two and a half weeks. A made-to-order piece on a 4-week estimate leaves nothing.Order today, ready-made only, and ask us first whether the listing is made to order. Size up if you sit between two rows. Skip armor and multi-piece builds.
3 weeksYour whole runway equals the top of the typical estimate. It could land with a week to spare, or on the day you leave.Decide whether you are willing to gamble. If you order, pick something you can wear straight out of the box, and line up a backup the same day.
2 weeks14 days sits inside the 10 to 21 day range, with no time for a try-on even if it goes well.Build this con's costume from what you can reach now. Order from Taobao for your next con instead.
Under 10 daysShorter than the bottom of the estimate. No order will make it. Go to the backup.

We don't sell a rush option, so paying more doesn't move the date. And because all sales are final, a costume that lands the Monday after the con is still yours. That's fine if you'd wear it to the next one. It's a bad surprise if you wouldn't.

A backup is a simpler version of the same character from pieces you own, borrow or can buy near you. Our guide to where cosplayers get their cosplays maps the other routes.

Say Noor is three weeks from her con and wants Wednesday Addams (Wednesday). She orders a ready-made Nevermore uniform, knowing it is a gamble. That evening she pulls a black dress and a white collar from her own closet.

If the parcel makes it, she wears the uniform. If it doesn't, she is still Wednesday, and the uniform is ready for the next con.

When the Box Arrives: The Try-On Checklist

Do all of this in the first two days, while there is still time to act on what you find.

  • Open the box the day it lands and count the pieces against the listing's included list.
  • If an item is wrong or damaged, contact us promptly with photos.
  • Put everything on at once: underlayers, costume, wig, shoes.
  • Move in it. Sit, climb stairs, raise your arms, and work out how the bathroom is going to go.
  • Pin the hems and anything loose. A costume can be taken in. Most can't be let out.
  • Trim and style the wig. Bangs usually arrive long.
  • Steam out the creases and hang the costume up.
  • Wear the shoes around the house for an hour.
  • Measure the prop against your con's limits.

Finish alterations a week before the con. Use the last week to wear the full costume once and fix whatever that turns up.

The Comic Con Costume Pack List

Pack two days before you leave, so a missing piece is a problem you can still solve.

  • Spare elastic and a few zip ties
  • Small scissors, if your con's rules allow them

The day bag

  • Cash and a card

Check how your con wants things carried, too. San Diego Comic-Con's convention policies tell attendees to leave handcarts, trolleys and rolling luggage at home, which rules out wheeling a costume in. If you carry a prop blaster at C2E2, Security marks it at Prop Check each day, so plan that stop into every morning.

Convention Cosplay Checklist FAQ

How far in advance should I order a comic con costume from Taobao?

Five to six weeks before the first day of the con. Use six for a made-to-order costume, a multi-piece build or armor, and five for a single ready-made piece. If Chinese New Year or Golden Week falls inside that window, order earlier.

Can Cosparty guarantee my cosplay arrives before the convention?

No. Delivery is estimated at 10 to 21 calendar days from order confirmation, and usually up to 4 weeks for made-to-order pieces. Production, holidays and customs can run longer. The buffer in this checklist improves your odds and promises nothing.

What if my costume arrives and does not fit?

All sales are final once sourcing has begun, and the quality check doesn't test fit. That is why the checklist leaves two weeks before the con: enough to hem, take in or have a local tailor adjust it. Measure in centimeters before you order.

What should be in a cosplay repair kit?

Safety pins, a needle and thread in the costume's colors, double-sided fashion tape, super glue, bobby pins, spare elastic and a few zip ties. Add small scissors if your con allows them. It all fits in a pencil case.

What should I bring to comic con if I am in cosplay?

The counted costume pieces, the wig and its pins, a repair kit, water, a charger, blister bandages, and your badge and ID. Bring a screenshot of the con's prop rules as well.

Count Back First, Then Order

Comic con costumes go wrong on the calendar more often than on the costume. Take the first day of your con, count back 6 weeks, and treat that as the order date. Leave the last two weeks for the try-on.

When you have the date, search Taobao in English with a link, a screenshot or the character's name, and check the full total before you decide. Not sure a listing can make your con? Ask in our Discord, where cosplayers answer, before you order. The policy behind every window on this page is on our shipping and returns page.
