Cosplay for Beginners: How to Order Your First Cosplay from Taobao

By Marty Cipher · Community & Partnerships · Published

Cosplay for beginners comes down to seven decisions, made in order: the character, the pieces, the budget, the listing, the size, the date and the quality check. Take them in that order and your first cosplay from Taobao is an ordinary online order. Skip one and you find out which when the box arrives.

You probably have the screenshot already. A character you love, a fit somebody wore better than the official art, and no shop tag anywhere. Often the trail ends at a Taobao listing, and that is where the nerves start: a site in Chinese, sizes that look wrong, and no sending it back.

We are Cosparty, a sourcing concierge for Taobao cosplay: you search in English, we buy the listing you chose and ship it to your door. This guide covers that first order and nothing else. The whole process, step by step, lives in our walkthrough on how to buy cosplay from Taobao.

Here you get each decision in turn, what we would pick for a first-timer, and the deeper guide to open when a decision needs more than a paragraph.

Quick answer For a first cosplay, pick a character whose outfit is sold as one complete set in standard sizes, with no armor. Budget from the full total, not the item price. Order by centimeters, at least 5 to 6 weeks before your event, and keep the optional $5 quality check on, because all sales are final.

The seven decisions, in the order they come up:

  1. Which character to start with.
  2. Which pieces go in the first order.
  3. What the whole thing costs.
  4. Which listing to buy.
  5. Which size to pick.
  6. When to order.
  7. Whether to keep the quality check.

Cosplay for Beginners: Which Character Should Your First Cosplay Be?

Pick a character whose whole outfit is sold as one set, in standard sizes, with no armor and no prop longer than your arm. Loving the character comes first. Among the characters you love, start with the one that is easiest to get right.

Three tests sort that out fast:

  • The outfit is a set: jacket, skirt or pants, tie and the small pieces come in one listing, so the colors match each other.
  • It comes in standard sizes: S to XL, off a size chart. Anything sewn to your personal measurements is the wrong call for a first order, and we don't source those listings anyway.
  • The hard part is small: every character has one piece that is easy to get wrong. Choose a character where that piece is a tie or a hat, and leave full armor for cosplay number two.

A Nevermore uniform for Wednesday Addams (Wednesday) passes all three. So does Luffy (One Piece): a red top, blue shorts and the straw hat.

Jinx (Arcane) is a step harder, because the long blue braids make the wig the main event. Hu Tao (Genshin Impact) is harder again, with the hat and the layered sleeves. Harder is allowed, as long as you go in knowing where the effort is.

If you want to see what a set looks like before you choose, browse Wednesday Addams cosplay or One Piece cosplay.

What Should Be in Your First Order?

The costume set and the wig. Everything else can wait, come out of your closet, or be borrowed from a friend who has done this before.

A finished cosplay is usually several purchases from several places. Our guide to where cosplayers get their cosplays maps every route, including making it yourself and buying secondhand. For a first order from Taobao, keep the basket short.

Props and armorNot this timeLarge props ship in the oversized tier, which starts at $50, and every convention sets its own prop rules

On that last row: San Diego Comic-Con, for one, inspects every costume prop daily and allows no functional or sharp-edged props (its policy page has the full list). Read your own con's rules before a prop goes in any basket.

Then read what the listing includes. The photos show the full look, and the wig and shoes in the hero shot can be separate listings. The included-pieces list is the part to trust.

If you'd rather make one piece yourself, Kamui Cosplay's getting started page is a friendly place to begin. Ordering with friends? Our group cosplay guide is written for whoever ends up organizing it.

What Does a First Cosplay Cost? Cosplay on a Budget, with the Real Total

Budget from the total at checkout. The price on the listing is only the first of four lines: the displayed item price, shipping by size, a 15% service fee on the item and shipping together, and a $5 quality check per item if you keep it on.

Say Priya is putting together her first cosplay and finds a uniform set at a displayed price of $48. It is a light costume, so it ships in the Medium tier.

LineAmount
Displayed item price (it includes our markup over the seller's price)$48.00
Shipping, Medium tier$20.00
Service fee, 15% of item plus shipping ($68.00)$10.20
Quality check, optional, on by default$5.00
Total shown before she pays$83.20

Shipping is a flat rate by size:

  • Small, $15: tiny accessories.
  • Medium, $20: wigs and light costumes.
  • Large, $25: heavy costumes and full sets.
  • Oversized, $50+: luggage and large props.

Those are single-item rates. Add a wig to the same basket and shipping is priced for the basket as a whole. You see that number before you pay.

One cost sits outside our total. Import duties, VAT and carrier fees are charged to you directly by customs or the carrier when the parcel reaches your country. Our shipping and returns page keeps current pointers for the US, UK, EU and Australia.

Cosplay on a budget doesn't mean hunting for the lowest price on the page. The lowest-priced version of a costume that needed better fabric is how a first order disappoints. Our guide to Taobao cosplay quality sorts listings into three price tiers and shows what each one gets you.

Save in other places: wear shoes you own, leave the prop for next time, and finish one character before you start a second. Put the money into the costume and the wig, because those two carry the character.

How Do You Find the Listing for the Cosplay You Saw?

You don't need the listing in hand. Start from whatever you have:

  • A link: paste it. We source Taobao and Tmall listings only.
  • A screenshot: upload it, and the image search looks for the listing. Our guide to finding a cosplay with image search shows which screenshots work best.
  • A name: type the character in English.

Want to scroll Taobao yourself first? Its own site is in Chinese. Our guide to the Taobao app in English covers what the language switch changes and where it stops.

Sooner or later you will have two listings that look identical. Photos are the least reliable thing on the page, so for a first order favor the listing with buyer photos and a size chart in centimeters. The full method is in the quality guide above, and is Taobao safe for cosplay lists the seller red flags.

Found it? Paste the link, drop the photo, or type the character into the search. The full price shows before checkout: item, shipping, service fee, and the quality check if you keep it.

Which Size Should a Beginner Order?

Order by centimeters, never by the letter. Chinese cosplay sizing runs about one to two sizes smaller than Western sizing, so a Chinese XL is roughly a Western M or L.

Measure your bust or chest, waist, hips and height with a soft tape, over whatever you plan to wear underneath. Match those numbers to that listing's own chart. If you land between two rows, take the bigger one.

Two things on the order page help. An Open size chart link sits next to the size picker whenever the seller supplied a chart, and a seller note takes your measurements and any fit question. We handle that conversation with the seller in Chinese before the order goes through.

One pair of terms trips up first-timers. Made to order means the seller sews your costume after you buy it, in a standard size. That is normal for cosplay, and it is slower.

Made to measure means sewn to your personal measurements, and we don't source those listings. Our Taobao cosplay sizing guide covers the chart terms, wigs and shoes.

When Should You Order Your First Cosplay?

Order at least 5 to 6 weeks before the day you need it. Delivery is 10-21 days door to door, and up to 4 weeks for made-to-order pieces. Treat both as estimates.

Say Leo's first con is on July 18. He counts back six weeks and gets an order-by date of June 6.

If the order runs to the usual estimate, the costume lands by late June. A made-to-order piece on a four-week estimate still leaves him two weeks.

Those two weeks are the point. A first cosplay needs a test fit, a steam, and a hem you didn't expect to fix. None of that happens the night before.

For Halloween, the same math says to order by mid-September. Sellers also slow down or pause around Chinese New Year and the early-October Golden Week, so add time if your date sits near either. Our shipping time guide has timelines by country and the full list of what causes delays.

Should You Keep the Quality Check On?

Yes, on a first order. The quality check is optional, costs $5 per item and comes selected by default, and you can switch it off before checkout. Keep it, because all sales are final once sourcing has begun.

With the check on, your item is inspected in China before it ships internationally. We look for the wrong item, the wrong color, visible damage and missing pieces. If something is off, we sort it out with the seller before the parcel leaves China.

It has limits. It can't tell you how the costume fits your body, and it can't turn a thin costume into a better one. Decisions one, four and five do that work, which is why they come first.

The rest of what makes a first order safe is plain. You pay by card, like any online store, with no wallet to load. You see the whole total before you pay, and the parcel is tracked to your door.

Cosplay for Beginners FAQ

What is the easiest cosplay for a beginner?

One where the whole outfit is sold as a single set in standard sizes, with no armor and no large prop. School uniforms and everyday outfits are the usual answer, like a Nevermore uniform or Luffy's top, shorts and straw hat.

How much should I spend on my first cosplay?

There is no right number, so budget from the total instead of the item price. As a worked example, a costume with a $48 displayed price comes to $83.20 with Medium shipping, the 15% service fee and the $5 quality check, before import charges and the wig.

Do I need to speak Chinese to order a cosplay from Taobao?

Not through us. You search in English and pay by card, and we handle the conversation with the seller in Chinese, sizing questions included.

Can I return my first cosplay if it does not fit?

No. All sales are final once sourcing has begun, and the quality check doesn't test fit, so measure in centimeters before you order. If a wrong or damaged item gets past the check, contact us promptly with photos.

How long before a convention should I order?

At least 5 to 6 weeks. Delivery is estimated at 10-21 days door to door and up to 4 weeks for made-to-order pieces, and the buffer leaves time for a test fit.

Your First Cosplay, One Decision at a Time

Cosplay for beginners gets easier once it stops being one big question. Character, pieces, total, listing, size, date, quality check. Seven small ones, and you have already made the first.

When you are ready, search Taobao in English with a link, a screenshot or the character's name, and read the full total before you decide. Stuck between two listings? Ask in our Discord, where cosplayers answer, or email contact@cospartyco.com.
